If you love having seaweed in your meals, thereâs another way you can incorporate it in your everyday beauty routine. Besides being delicious, seaweed is filled with vitamins and minerals to benefit the skin. Seaweed is a blanket term for marine plants and algae that grow in all bodies of water. Their environment is rich in life thanks to the sun and salt that seaweed has a dense concentration of minerals, vitamins, proteins, and amino acidsâall good things for your skin to absorb. Over centuries, seaweed has been found as part of the beauty routines from people long agoâfrom Greece to Chinaâso itâs no surprise that with modern technology, we can experience the skin benefits of seaweed as well.
Seaweed is rich with vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals. These plants are able to withstand intense temperatures, pressure changes, and live in high-salinity environments. Itâs no wonder that scientists are researching just how they can withstand it all. When it comes to skincare, perhaps seaweed can also make our skin withstand our own environmental stressors.
Because seaweed is antioxidant-rich, itâs a great igredient to help with fine lines and wrinkles. Itâs high in amino acids to help boost collagen production, which in turn can help smoothen lines and keep skin soft.
Another benefit of seaweed is itâs ability to regulate oil production. Some studies have shown a decrease in oiliness which in turn decreased their acne as well. Speaking of acne, seaweed has anti-inflammatory properties to help soothe redness and sensitivity in the skin.
Now that youâve learned about the amazing benefits of seaweed, weâd like to introduce you to the latest upcoming mask in our collection, our Sea the Radiance mask!
The star ingredient is of course, seaweed! Being close to the ocean, we were inspired to make a sheet mask dedicated to beach-ready skin and after-sun skincare. This mask is great year round for a hydrated glow to the skin but it is perfect to use after a long day, chilling at the beach.Â
We wanted to take a step further and have the sheet material be marine energy infused. Not only is seaweed found in the essence, we also coated the sheet mask with a layer of seaweed extracts so that it leaves a hydrating slip to the skin.Â
Check out our Sea the Radiance sheet mask, available now!
The term âGlass Skinâ was coined by the beauty industry in South Korea, where flawless, dewy complexions are highly admired and desired. The trend represents a skin texture that appears smooth, translucent and has a reflective shine, similar to a piece of glass. Itâs quite a stark difference from the matte looks that were once popular. Letâs take a look at some of the key steps to achieve glass skin.
Double cleansing is another well-known trend and is a key step into getting glass skin. Begin by thoroughly removing any makeup or impurities with an oil-based cleanser. Follow up with a gentle cleanser to ensure a deep and gentle cleanse. We recommend the Urban Calm Gentle Cleanser for this step as this product will gently exfoliate the skin without over-stripping the skin of moisture.Â
Hydration is the key to achieving glass skin so it is encouraged to layer on lightweight products to build hydration. After cleansing we recommend following up with a toner. We recommend using the Urban Calm Soft Essence as itâs very lightweight on the skin but can deeply hydrate and soothe the skin. After applying soft essence, apply a hydrating serum for maximum hydration. The Urban Calm Vita Serum is our recommendation as the serum is lightweight and contains a powerful dosage of Niacinamide to help lighten up the skin and any dark spots.
Urban Calm Soft EssenceUrban Calm Vita Serum
The final step of the glass skin routine is to top it off with a moisturizer to lock and seal the hydration inside the skin. The Urban Calm Barrier Cream is the perfect product for this as it contains Fermented Honeybush and Hyaluronic Acid to help keep the skin firm and smooth, while also sealing in all the potent ingredients from your routine for a protected, healthier skin barrier!
This step can come first or can be optional for some. Sheet masking is one of the other ways to prep and deeply hydrate your skin for that dewy, reflective look. Our favorite sheet mask for glass skin is our Glow Baby Glow sheet mask that contains Niacinamide to help replenish the skinâs moisture, calm down any redness and irritation, and brighten the skin for a glowy look!
The Glass Skin Trend has definitely revolutionized the beauty industry with its emphasis on achieving healthy, radiant skin. So by following a diligent skincare routine that focuses on protecting your skin's barrier and hydration, you can achieve a luminous, translucent complexion reminiscent of glass! Remember that consistency is key, so be patient and enjoy your selfcare journey towards your own glass skin!Â
]]>Â
Our Sun Bae mask is made specifically for helping treat and soothe the skin. Itâs formulated with potent ingredients like Aloe Leaf Extract which is designed to replenish the skinâs hydration and alleviate any redness. It also adds a layer of protection on the skin to help protect from any future free radical damage.Â
Â
Woah That H2O - Hydrating Mask
This 2-step hydrating mask is perfect for quenching and restoring hydration that mightâve been lost during the day! The Jasmine Flower Extract infused mask strengthens the skin barrier to retain moisture levels while helping balance out the skinâs natural oil production with proper hydration.Â
Dream Garden Chamomile Waffle Mask - Calming & Hydrating
Infused with chamomile, it's perfect for soothing irritated skin while also targeting and quenching any dry and dehydrated skin. The cotton waffle material holds an ample amount of hydrating jelly-like essence to reverse any damage caused by UV rays and ensures that your skin retains all the necessary hydration it needs.Â
We recommend that you use these sheet masks soon after you come back inside from a day out! But of course, you are more than welcome to use it whenever you feel that itâs best, be it mid-day or right before bed!Â
Itâs important to enjoy your summer by going outside, taking a walk, or going out to the beach with some friends, but itâs just as important to take care of your skin as well. Keep your skin hydrated and soothed for stress-free and glowy summer skin!

We might think that our pillowcases are the least of our worries, but letâs remind ourselves that our face and body touches them every night⌠All the dirt that accumulates can be one of the main reasons as to why your skin gets pimples. The ideal is to change or wash your pillowcases every other day or after 3 days.Â
If you want to go a step further, silk pillowcases are recommended for those with both acne-prone and sensitive skin! While silk pillowcases are known for their benefits for keeping hair smooth, they can actually help with wrinkles! Silk pillowcases are less abrasive than normal pillowcases, allowing your skin to be comfortable while you sleep!Â
Double cleansing has been a standard practice in Korea for the longest time, and it is now becoming more popular here in the West! Double cleansing does not mean just washing your face twice with the same cleanser, itâs about washing your face with two SEPARATE types of cleansers!Â
The most common first step in double cleansing is washing with an oil cleanser as this can really sink into the pores and rid it of all of the dirt thatâs lodged in there! And for those who wear makeup, oil-based cleansers will slough it right off so your skin can be ready to absorb the next cleanserâs benefits! After using the oil-based cleanser, the second cleanser should be more gentle or hydrating, because you do not want to over-strip your skin of its natural moisture. Itâs important to first take it slow when double cleansing because each skin is made uniquely so what may work for someone else, may not work for you! So test it out carefully before fully incorporating it into your routine!Â
You may have heard the word âactiveâ or âactive ingredientâ being thrown around here and there in the skincare community, but what exactly is an âactiveâ, and can overusing it actually cause more acne?Â
The short answer is actives are an ingredient in a product that addresses whatever skin concern itâs meant to target. For example, if you are getting a cleanser that is claiming to treat acne, the active ingredient in that product could be something like salicylic acid.Â
Other examples of active ingredients include retinol, niacinamide, vitamin c, glycolic acid, and more! Make sure to test how often to use these ingredients as overusing products that have active ingredients can damage your skin barrier, causing you to experience even more breakouts!Â
We know how tempting it is to try the newest product thatâs blowing up on social media, but youâre actually putting lots of stress onto your skin by putting on active ingredients without giving it time to prep. Which is why we say to test out a product every other day before you incorporate it to see if itâs benefiting your skin and to give your skin some time to adjust!
Â
Check out our favorite acne-fighting skincare:
Our Leaf Drops is perfect for those dealing with redness and breakouts. Hemp Seed Oil is known for its repairing and hydrating properties so give it a shake and add it to your routine to take care of your acne flare up!
Â
Our trusty Spot Fighter pimple patches are the best way to keep your hands from picking at your pimples! The hydrocolloid sticks on the skin really well to fully cover your spots and speed up the healing process.

]]>Dull skin is an all-encompassing term for skin that is no longer healthy! Some common reasons behind dull skin are the over-accumulation of dead skin, debris from the day, and skin being dehydrated.Â
Things like dietâthe food you eat dailyâlifestyle, and your morning and night skincare routine help combat and alleviate dull skin so you can have a radiant complexion all throughout your day! Letâs take a deeper look at these factors, shall we?Â
The type of foods you consume can help make or break your skin! Now weâre not telling you to completely cut off your favorite chocolate bar or your favorite sour gummies, but we want to remind you to just eat them in moderation!Â
Incorporating more foods like flaxseeds, salmon, and walnuts into your diet are fantastic ways to keep your fatty acid levels high! These same fatty acids are the building blocks for your skin barrier so your skin looks plump and young!Â
Other foods that have high antioxidants like broccoli, spinach, and carrots, or for our fruit lovers, strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries, are great for the skin because the antioxidants can help protect your skin from oxidative damage that comes from free radicals like the sun!
If youâre still looking for a reason to use SPF, look no further because, without it, youâre inducing more damage to your skin. The UV rays break down all the really important proteins in your skin which can damage your skin barrier, leading to dull, uneven-looking skin! Â
So if youâre going out for the day, donât forget to lather some sunscreen on your skin!
Exfoliation is a common term you hear in skincare, and for good reason! Exfoliating weekly, or biweekly depending on your skin type, can help rid the skin of leftover dead skin cells! This causes skin cell turnover so you have beautiful, radiant skin when youâre done exfoliating!
Incorporating skincare ingredients like Vitamin C or Yuja Extract are great ways to brighten your skin. Apply it to any areas of concern on your skin, and like any other skincare product, be consistent as it will take some time before you notice any differences!Â
Some products that contain Yuja Extract are the FaceTory Star Velvet Sleeping Mask! Apply this mask after your night routine, right before bed, and let the mask work its magic while you sleep! Youâll wake up feeling refreshed and left with beautiful, glowing skin!
The FaceTory Be Bright Be You Sheet Mask contains Lemon Fruit Extract (Vitamin C) which helps target dull areas on the skin and brightens them! The sheet mask also helps target dry skin and gives them a boost of hydration!Â
Dull skin may seem intimidating to tackle as there's an influx of information out there, but we hope we simplified and gave you an idea on how to obtain that glowing complexion!Â

]]>How does dry weather affect the skin?
When temperatures dip, the humidity levels also like to go down as well! Your skin loves staying moisturized, but once there is no moisture in the environment to grab from, your skin begins to dry out resulting in cracked, irritated skin! You might also experience breakouts or if you suffer from conditions like eczema, you may experience flare-ups.Â
There are various ways to protect and rehydrate your skin during these dry weather days! One of our favorite ways is using facial masks! Facial masks are a great way to not only protect and rehydrate the skin, but also theyâre such a fun self-care product to use daily or weekly! Letâs take a look at some of the best sheet masks to use for dry weather, shall we?
This creamy essence mask is absolutely heavenly and really packs a punch in the hydration department! It contains a key ingredient, Shea Butter, that will help deeply hydrate and soften any dry skin on the face. It will also protect the skinâs barrier simultaneously, preventing any current and future moisture loss! Not to mention, it leaves the skin feeling velvety soft!Â
This mask is a 2-Step mask that was made for quenching and alleviating dry skin!Â
It contains Jasmine Flower Extract which helps restore the skinâs moisture levels while also strengthening the skin barrier to prevent any future moisture loss! The Jasmine Flower Extract also helps give your skin a beautiful dewy look!
This chamomile-infused mask is perfect for those struggling with extremely dry skin! The waffle design behind the mask ensures that the mask contains an ample amount of essence to help rehydrate the skin! The Chamomilla Recutita Flower Water helps refresh the skin, reverse any sun damage that may have occurred, and helps regulate oil production!Â
Â
This mask is made to help soften and smooth the skin all while alleviating any irritated areas! The Jasmine Flower Extract that is infused in this mask helps restore the skinâs moisture and leaves you with a beautiful afterglow! As the name suggests, this mask is made to be used daily!
We know how hard it is to find a solution to dry skin, as it seems like no matter how many products you try, nothing just seems to quench the skin! But with our heavy-hitting moisturizing face masks, you can kiss dry skin goodbye and embrace dewy, hydrated skin!

KFAMLA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to empower underserved Korean American and Asian Pacific Islander families through culturally responsive programs. With Urban Calm being inspired by our foundersâ Korean roots, we wanted to partner with an organization that continues to help those in our community struggling with mental health as many of us can relate to this mission.Â
We asked KFAMLAâs Executive Director, Katherine Yeom, about her thoughts on self-care and whether this can help manage oneâs mental and emotional stress:
Yeom: âYes, one of the biggest steps in therapy is to create a healthy outlet [for] stress and anxiety caused by day-to-day life. Creating a routine is very important, something that is constant in your life, so creating a skincare routine can be a self-care step to calm oneself, reflect on the day (decompress) and have a sense of control in todayâs fast-paced lifestyle.â
Mi Young Kim, one of the therapists from KFAMLA, also agrees with Yeom, saying, âSelf-care is a mindset or attitude toward life that seeks holistic wellbeing. In this regard, I am excited to see the topic of self-care gaining attention and being addressed more and more.â Another therapist, Christine Han, adds that âself-care trends such as meditating, breathing exercises, and facials/massages help you release tension and relax using your senses. A relaxed mind makes better choices vs. a stressed mind.â When we are relaxed, we are able to make better decisions for ourselves and are able to react and respond better to any challenges we face. Also, âin order to care for those around you, you first need to take care of yourself!â As Jane Park, a fellow therapist, kindly reminds us. Itâs best to give yourself time to practice self-care on a daily basis, to keep yourself balanced. When we are emotionally and mentally balanced, moods are improved and we can perform tasks better and have more focus.
With KFAMLAâs words, we hope we can encourage more people to take some time in the day to do self-care; either through doing skincare, meditating, or something more active like working out. Itâs a great way to mentally decompress and destress so that we can be ready to face new challenges and keep going.Â

]]>Collagen synthesis is very important for providing structure and elasticity to the skin. As we age, collagen production naturally declines. However, vitamin C has been shown to stimulate the production of collagen, which can help reduce the appearance of any fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture and firmness.
Vitamin C is also very effective, and mostly known for, reducing hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when excess melanin is produced in certain areas of the skin, this causes the dark spots and patches to form. Vitamin C can help to inhibit the production of melanin, which can help fade existing hyperpigmentation and prevent new spots from forming. Additionally, vitamin C has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce redness and inflammation in the skin. This makes it an excellent ingredient for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin.
If youâre looking to incorporate Vitamin C into your skincare routine, the most popular item to first try out would be a Vitamin C serum. Serums are very lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas that can easily be applied after cleansing and before moisturizing. These serums usually contain a higher concentration of vitamin C than other skincare products, which can make them more effective compared to other products.
While other products may not be as potent as serums, they can still provide a wide range of benefits for the skin, so try looking for moisturizers or masks that contain vitamin C.
When introducing vitamin C into your skincare routine, itâs important to start slowly and to always patch test first! Some people may experience irritation or sensitivity to vitamin C, especially if the product contains a higher concentration of vitamin C.
We also recommend that you apply sunscreen after applying vitamin C. If you applied during the night, we still strongly recommend applying sunscreen the next morning. Vitamin C can make your skin extremely sensitive to the UV rays and can cause intense skin damage.
Vitamin C is a powerful ingredient that can offer numerous benefits for the skin. So whether you choose or a serum or look for other products that contain vitamin C, incorporating this nutrient into your routine can help improve the overall health and appearance of your skin.Â
]]>Blackheads are very common and typically affect teenagers or young adults who are undergoing hormonal changes, but blackheads can still affect those in their 20s or 30s too!Â
To put it simply, blackheads are a type of acne but they are not pimples! Pimples are small, painful, and usually discolored bumps that have a white-yellowish fluid (AKA pus) at the top. Blackheads open up little bumps on the skin and fill them with excessive amounts of oil and dead skin. These bumps turn black because if the bump opens, the air exposure can turn the bump to an average blackhead.
There are plenty of products in the market that contains AHAs and BHAs in them, but what we really want to look for are cleansers. AHAs will work above the skinâs surface level to really exfoliate the dead skin cells that clog up your pores while BHAs will work below the skinâs surface to exfoliate the insides of your pores and push all of the gunk and dead skin cells out!Â
A couple of years back, chemical peels became all the hype, and for good reason too! Applying a chemical peel once a week will help unclog your pores and will eat away at the blackheads, leaving your skin looking smooth and clearer! At the same time, these peels are able to help deposit other ingredients into the skin that can help with other issues such as dark spots or hyperpigmentation!Â
We want to warn that these peels should NOT be used every day, and you should slowly introduce your skin to peels as these products tend to be a little strong on certain skin types! We also strongly recommend hydrating more than usual on days you use peels as they can be quite drying.Â
Blackheads are a very common skin concernâeveryone deals with them! But we hope that these tips help you understand what steps you need to take to get rid of your current blackheads and prevent any future ones as well! Remember to be patient as these skin results donât happen overnight and it may take some time to see results.Â

Self-care is not selfish, itâs essential and important for us. When we practice self-care, we feel better about ourselves and have more energy to give to those around us. Get comfy as we discuss more about our favorite self-care tips.
Regular physical activity is one of the best ways to take care of both your physical and mental health. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins! Endorphins are natural mood boosters, which help make you feel more energetic and happier! Endorphins also help reduce stress and anxiety.Â
By getting even just 15 or 30 minutes worth of physical activity, whether it's yoga, a walk, or going to the gym, your body and mind will seriously be thanking you!Â
We know how fun it is to stay up late into the night, binge-watching the latest shows or catching up on internet drama, but prioritizing your sleep is so important! Sleep deprivation leads us to feel more stressed, and can often ramp up our emotions and reactions to situations!Â
By prioritizing and trying to get the necessary 7-8 hours of sleep, your body will have the necessary energy it needs to fight off any infections or illnesses. You will also begin feeling a lot more focused and calm because your body has stored up the energy it needs for the day!Â
Skincare is one of the easiest and most important things when it comes to self-care! Practicing a daily skincare routine allows you to begin and end your day feeling loved, beautiful, and relaxed!Â
A skincare routine can be as simple as cleansing your face and applying a sheet mask and topping it off with a moisturizer and sunscreen!Â
Â
We know that we all lead busy lives, juggling work, family, and social responsibilities, so itâs easy to neglect our own needs in the process. Self care is something that we need to normalize in our everyday lives, so just take a little time out of your day to truly show yourself some love~!Â

]]>Helps Reduce Stress Levels
First, let's discuss the scalp! The head is full of nerves so massages can help relax the scalp by stimulating the nerve endings. This can also help reduce muscle tension, resulting in lower blood pressure, and helps reduce the levels of stress hormones!
Promotes Hair Growth
Scalp massages can also assist in the promotion of hair growth. A study was done in Japan, and the results showed that those who consistently did hair massages experienced an increase in hair thickness after 25 weeks. This was a result of the increased blood flow in the scalp!Â
Helps against Hair Loss
Scalp massages can also help combat hair loss by keeping your Oxidative stress levels at bay! Oxidative stress is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants, and can be caused by several things such as diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors such as air pollution and sun damage!Â
Having high levels of Oxidative stress can negatively impact the rate your hair grows and can even lead to hair loss! So by conducting scalp massages, relaxing those nerves, and stimulating all the nutrients in the blood, it can help lower those stress levels!
Hair care and Scalp care are heavily intertwined, so it's really good to know how to not only take care of your beautiful hair strands but the scalp as well!Â

]]>What Causes Dry Lips
Lips are the most sensitive during the Winter season due to the dry indoors and the cold outdoors. The combination of such harsh climates lead to chapped or cracked lips because unlike other parts of the skin, lips do not have any oil producing glands to help with moisture. So keeping those pretty lips of yours hydrated is very important!
Stop Licking Your Lips
You might have licked your lips before to help re-moisturize them, but licking lips can actually lead to more dryness! In extreme cases it can also lead to yeast build-up or really painful inflammation. So instead of licking your lips, keep a lip-balm on you for easy reapplication!Â
Extremely Dry Lips
If you are experiencing extremely dry lips, we recommend trying out an exfoliating lip treatment 1-2 times a week to get rid of all the dry, irritated skin on the lips! We know how tempting it is to pick off any of the dry skin thatâs left but try to resist! Picking and biting your lips extensively can lead to more damage and irritation!Â
Berry Jam Lip Sleeping Mask with Strawberry
To combat extremely dry lips, we recommend trying out the FaceTory Berry Jam Lip Sleeping Mask with Strawberry! The lip mask is a jam-like texture making it glide easily upon application and locks in the moisture so your lips stay smooth and supple!
SPF on the Lips
Believe it or not, your lips also need SPF just like how your skin needs SPF! Like we said earlier, lips are still skin, which makes them vulnerable to UV rays, so looking for a lip balm that has SPF in it will have your lips thanking you in the long run!Â
We all know the struggles of having dry, cracked lips, so we hoped that this helped you realize just how important it is to take care of your lips just like how you take care of your skin!

]]>This is a hard one! We all have those urges to just poke or scratch off any pimples or bumps we feel on our faces but try to resist! While picking at your skin may feel like a quick solution for acne-less skin, the damage youâre creating by picking it is usually worse than having the blemish to begin with! Not to mention, if your hands arenât clean, you could be spreading germs and grease onto your skin, further causing breakouts! So letâs try to keep our hands off our faces in 2023!Â
We all have those days when we come home after an exhausting day and all we want to do is just crash on our bed. As tiring and annoying as it is, you should still be cleansing and taking off your makeup before bed. If not, youâll be going to sleep with clogged pores, oils, and dead skin cells which can lead to blemishes!Â
However, if you are feeling tired, you donât have to do your entire routine, we simply recommend that you take off your makeup and cleanse your face! Your skin will thank you in the morning!
SPF has boomed in popularity this past year, and for good reason! SPF is incredibly important, so important that we recommend incorporating it into your everyday routine! Exposure to UV rays is by far the biggest factor in prematurely aging skin, and can even cause your skin to develop sunspots, wrinkles, and possibly even sagging skin! So let's get our SPF game on in 2023!
Products with natural ingredients are a great way to help your skin stay youthful and healthy for longer while preventing it from getting overwhelmed by the various chemicals that can be found within normal skincare products. They also have greater anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties, making them better for your skin!Â
Double cleansing is a method of cleansing the face twice. Usually, youâd start with an oil-based cleanser and then cleanse again with a wash that is best suited for your skin type. This method can help remove any stubborn, pore-clogging, and acne-causing impurities that may still remain on the skin! We recommend double cleansing at night to fully remove the makeup, oils, and dirt your face has accumulated throughout the day!Â
Double cleansing ensures that your face has a clean canvas so that any treatments and moisturizing done after, are not done in vain!Â
We hope this helped you decide what to take and add to your new 2023 skincare routine! We recommend testing these habits out slowly as theyâre not a one-fits-all; you can obviously change up the habits to best suit your skinâs needs and wants!Â
Â
We at FaceTory want to thank all of you for your wonderful support throughout 2022 and weâre excited to see how big we grow in 2023!
Love,
FaceTory Team.
Dandruff is, to put it simply, a yeast that grows everywhere (donât worry itâs natural!). Its scientific name is Malassezia and it lives mostly on our skin. However, when there is an overproduction of this fungus, skin shedding happens at an even faster rate! This causes us to see the white flakes we associate with dandruff.
Malassezia is a yeast that lives and thrives in the oil deposits on our scalps! The warmth and moisture coming from our scalp allows them to grow which then sets off an alarm on our scalp, telling us that our scalp is itchy! This is why, when you experience dandruff, your scalp is a lot more sensitive.Â
Buying an over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoo can simply do the trick! However, there are various other steps and products that you should consider taking in order to truly keep dandruff at bay!
Salicylic acid has been proven multiple times before on its effectiveness towards dandruff. Just a precaution though, shampoos that contain salicylic acid can be very drying so be sure to follow up with a heavy conditioner or a hair mask afterward!Â
Production of dandruff can be worsened if your scalp becomes too dry! So be sure to keep that beautiful head of yours locked and loaded with moisture!Â
Yes, your scalp needs occasional exfoliating just like your skin does. Exfoliating your scalp will gently lift the dry layer of skin and will help remove any dead skin, causing dandruff to dissolve. Exfoliation can be very drying so similar to skin care, we recommend only exfoliating once or twice a week.
Just remember that everyone experiences dandruff here and there and that itâs just a natural occurrence! But we hope with these tips, you can find the first step you need to take into alleviating your scalp from dandruff!

]]>To simplify it, think of your scalp as an empty piece of cropland, with each of your hair follicles being crops. If the land is not healthy, the crops will struggle to grow, but if the land is healthy then the crops will grow in abundance. Your scalp is basically the same way! Each scalp, regardless of hair type, has a microbiome, and in the event that this microbiome gets agitated or disrupted, it could lead to issues like dandruff or eczema!Â
With that being said, itâs just as important to not only care for your hair but also to protect and keep your scalp healthy! We compiled some signs to look out for on your scalp, tips, and some product recommendations!Â
Determining What Scalp Type You Have
First, there are two common scalp types: a dry scalp and an oily scalp. Itâs pretty easy to determine which type you have based on your hair type (straight, wavy, or curly) and based on the overall appearance of the hair!Â
For example; if you find your hair looking greasy within 1-2 days after washing, you most likely have an oily scalp. Those with dry scalps might find themselves being able to wash their hair only once a week before it appears to look oily.
Another trick is to test with tissue paper! Normal scalps will leave a small translucent area behind, oily scalps will be more saturated, and dry scalps may not see anything on the paper. Once youâve determined your scalp type, letâs look into how to care for it!
How to Take Care of a Dry Scalp
The main issue with a dry scalp is the skin is often irritated and can flake off. The skin may also appear red and can feel itchy. Eczema is also a very common side effect of having a dry scalp. Â
In order to care for it, try reducing the number of times you wash within a week, and opting for more gentle shampoos and conditioners, as other brands may strip your hair of its moisture.Â
Another great option is to opt for scalp toners or scalp masks that are designed to rehydrate and lock in moisture!Â
The FaceTory Moisturize Scalp & Hair Mask with Fermented Soybean is a scalp and hair treatment designed to renew the hair from the scalp down. It contains Fermented Soybean and Avocado Oil to deliver smoothing and anti-frizz benefits while restoring and fortifying the scalp!Â
How To Care for an Oily Scalp
Oily scalps are often caused by an overproduction of sebum from the scalp's oil glands. The oil then absorbs into the hair, making your hair appear greasy. Other signs include dead skin cell buildup, acne, and dandruff.Â
For an oily scalp, try and wash your hair every other day or even every two days to help prevent the oil from clogging up the hair follicles. You also want to be sure to limit the number of times you use any clarifying shampoos as they can over-strip your hair, causing the scalp to produce more oil to make up for the loss.Â
We also advise staying away from heavy or thick leave-in-conditioners as they can weigh down your hair strands which will contribute to an oily scalp.Â
The FaceTory Balance Scalp and Hair mask is perfect for, well, balancing the scalp! Infused with fermented Aloe and Jojoba Oil, it will balance the scalpâs pH levels all while nourishing and hydrating the hair strands for soft, smooth hair!Â
Just like skincare, there is no one-size-fits-all, and each hair type and scalp type are different. Each scalpâs needs and wants are all unique to us, but we hope this gives you greater insight into how to take care of your scalp, and what products to use, to promote healthier, shinier hair!Â

]]>Finding Products for Your Hair Type
Figuring out your hair type and which products go best with it is key to eliminating frizz and the first step towards achieving that soft, beautiful hair. Using the products targeted towards curly hair when you have straight hair wonât do anything and can potentially be the reason for the frizz! So do your research and figure out which products work best for you~!
Incorporating Hair Oils or Hair Masks
Hair oils and hair masks are a holy grail when it comes to getting your hair manageable and frizz-free! For hair oils we recommend massaging it into your scalp if you have a DRY scalp, if you have an OILY scalp we recommend focusing the product more towards the ends of the hair follicles, avoiding the roots.
Hair masks are great for providing your hair with extra moisture and helping in sealing the hair follicles to keep all the good natural oils contained in your hair! If youâve previously dyed or damaged your hair in the past, hair masks are a good investment to look into as they are made to repair and restore the hair!
The FaceTory newly released hair mask series is perfect for not only hair treatment but also scalp treatment as well. Each mask has a fermented ingredient that is formulated to restore, moisturize or strengthen both the hair follicles and the scalp! The best part about it? It comes in compact resealable packaging, making it great for easy storage and traveling! This hair mask can also be used every day, giving you the chance to get that gorgeous, flowing hair, quickly!
Reducing Heat Products
Some of us love that sleek look of flat-ironed hair or beach waves that were achieved using a curling wand, but what we tend to overlook is the damage that these heat products have on our hair! Overusing these heat styling tools can ultimately lead to our hair becoming frizzy, dry, and brittle! Being mindful or even simply applying heat protectants can help your hair become less damaged and much more manageable!Â
We want to end off by saying that frizzy hair is actually a lot more common and not everyone is born with gorgeous, frizz-free hair. There are a lot of factors that play into having frizzy hair, such as hair type, environment, scalp types, and many other factors, but by taking into consideration the usage of hair oils, hair masks, and reducing the usage of heat-styling tools, you can eliminate frizz and achieve that glossy, soft hair!

What Happens To Your Skin When Dry Weather Occurs
The cold temperatures and low humidity levels that come with this upcoming season draw away moisture from the skin! The harsh winds from the outdoors combined with the dry air from the heater can lead to dry, and possibly cracked and bleeding skin! Horrifying, right?! Itâs also worth noting that friends with skin conditions like eczema may see a sudden flare-up with this weather change.Â
Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!
The best ingredient to avoid that cracked and blistering skin is to incorporate some shea butter into your routine! Our Star Velvet Sleeping Mask with Shea Butter is fantastic for hydrating your skin while you sleep, that way you wake up with happy and hydrated skin!Â
Combating Dull Skin
Autumn skin is when your skin becomes more dull and loses its beautiful glow! But worry not! To avoid getting that dull autumn skin, avoid taking overly hot showers (we know, it's hard!) as those hot showers can actually strip away the skin's moisture! (Gasp!) We recommend using products like our Jojoba Oil to restore your skin's moisture and its natural shine!
Donât Over-Exfoliate
We know that with summer weather, we tend to exfoliate a bit more than usual just to really clean the skin of that sweat and gunk weâve accumulated throughout our day. However, now that the weather is getting a bit chillier, you want to lay off on exfoliating just a little bit! Over-exfoliating can cause your skin to dry out, and combining the conditions of the incoming weather may dry out your skin even more!Â
To combat this, we here at FaceTory have a gentle foaming cleanser that deeply cleans your pores without removing the excess moisture! Itâs infused with Chaga and Oats to soothe any dryness and retain moisture in the skin! Our Sky Drops can also be helpful for dry skin as sky drops contain hyaluronic acid to help combat dry skin and hydrate the skin to make it happy and moisturized!Â
Get Some Moisture in The Air!
A non-skincare required option to keep your skin protected from this upcoming dry weather is using a humidifier in your room/house! The humidifier puffs out⌠well, humid air, keeping the air nice and moist for your skin to enjoy!Â
Â
Knowing how to keep your skin hydrated and healthy during this upcoming dry season is necessary to fight off any potential arising skin issues! We here at FaceTory hope you all stay bundled up and keep your skin hydrated and healthy~!

FaceTory Team

]]>Our skin is pigmented â this means that it has color and each person has varying shades and hues that are naturally a part of their skin. Hyperpigmentation occurs when parts of our skin begin to discolor, possibly going darker or redder than the rest of our face and bodies. This can sometimes develop thanks to exposure to the sun and our environment. Sometimes, this can look cute â like in the case of freckles. In other cases, sunspots can turn into moles and other potentially dangerous pockets of skin. Another common cause of hyperpigmentation is acne â which can leave discoloration and marks on our skin even when the bumps go away.Â
Now that we understand a little more about what hyperpigmentation is, and how it starts, the next step is understanding how to treat it.Â
One of the best ways to fight hyperpigmentation and other reactions to sun exposure is by finding a trusted brand of sunscreen to wear every day. And yes, that includes cloudy days! Hazy days can be some of the most common days to get burned: consistency is key! Once youâve got the sunscreen checked off your list, there are a number of face masks and other products that can be added to your skincare routine, too.Â
At FaceTory, we carry special products that we recommend to treat discoloration such as:Â
Star Velvet Vitamin C Sleeping Mask with Yuja â ideal for brightening dull texture and evening skin tone.Â
Light My Night Illuminating Sheet Mask - Yuja â perfect for replenishing skin radiance and balancing skin.Â
Glow Baby Glow 2-Step Sheet Mask â great for brightening and refining skin texture.Â
Be Bright Be You Gold Foil Sheet Mask â wonderful for strengthening skin and removing dark spots.Â
Everyday Pearl Brightening Sheet Mask â excellent for evening skin texture and brightening skin.Â
Whatever products you choose, it never hurts to check in with a trusted dermatologist to see what theyâd recommend for you.Â

]]>As the weather gets colder, our skin can begin to get dryer, especially when there are harsh winds or dramatic temperatures. This can be exaggerated thanks to situations where we may leave warm cars to take walks in the cold, only to end up back inside warm buildings (or inside hot showers). This flip-flopping between temperatures can also throw our bodies off and lead to irritated autumn skin. We also have a tendency to wear more knit-wear and different fabric textures, some of which may actually add to that irritation.Â
On top of staying away from overly hot showers (which can remove some of your skinâs natural oils), we recommend using a product with jojoba oil in it, like our Sunflower Glow Facial Oil! Jojoba oil prevents wrinkles, dark spots, and dry skin.Â
See it in action!

]]>Does your pimple have a white center? It means itâs ready to pop any minute! Best to put a pimple patch on it so the gunk gets sucked out and the pore wonât get infected.Â
Â
After a patch is removed, apply a second one to make sure all the gunk is taken out! This also gives the open pore time to heal.
Â
Make sure to apply the patch on a clean face so no dirt or oil is trapped under it along with the pimple. A clean, dry face is the perfect environment for your patch to succeed.
Â
Itâs best to apply a pimple patch right after cleansing so that it can target the pimple without other skincare products blocking it.
Pimple patches should stay on your skin for 6-8 hours! Any longer and the patches may start actually irritating the skin instead of helping it.Â
Â
If you donât happen to have a band aid on hand, you can use a pimple patch as first aid to paper cuts and prevent it from getting infected. Some band-aid brands use hydrocolloid patches (the fancy name for pimple patches), to promote healing. Â
Â
Always have clean hands when removing a pimple patch! You donât want to add germs to open pores or your clean face! Otherwise, youâll find yourself starting the process all over again.Â

]]>Weâve spoken a lot about the microbiome and the skin barrier, the bacteria that live in and surround our bodies, and the layer of skin that protects us from the outside world. But a lot of our health is also dependent on what happens inside â more specifically in our guts. Itâs not glamorous to talk about gut health, but it is important. A lot of necessary bacteria bloom and grow in our guts and help us digest what we eat, and break down nutrientsÂ
You may have heard that âall fermented food is pickled, but not all pickled food is fermented,â but what does that mean? To pickle something, it has to either be fermented (âcookedâ in a natural brine) or bathed in vinegar, which means that technically anything fermented could qualify as being âpickled,â while not everything âpickledâ may have been officially fermented.
Why does that matter? When food is actually fermented it can enhance some of the better parts of the food for your gut including amino acids in meat and proteins, and vitamins and probiotics in other foods, which can have all kinds of benefits, especially for your gutâs microbiome. Pickled food, on the other hand, may taste similar, but does not come with any specific benefits.Â
From yogurt to sourdough bread and miso soup, there are countless ways to get some of the health benefits that come from eating fermented foods. However, just like how peopleâs skin can react differently to various products and skincare routines, not everyoneâs gut will respond to probiotic-rich foods the same way.Â
Some of the side effects can include bloating, headaches, and even resistance to antibiotics. While many people have positive responses to fermented foods, it's always a good idea to talk first to your doctor or dermatologist if youâre curious about how your body may respond to introducing something new to your diet or routine.Â
Thatâs a wrap on todayâs lesson on fermented foods. Stay tuned for more informed skincare tips!Â

Both probiotics and prebiotics can be used in skincare supplements to help strengthen sensitive skin and defend the skin barrier against skin conditions like acne and eczema. Probiotic supplements in skincare can also help repair sun-damaged skin and prevent other future skin conditions. If youâre trying to treat multiple skin concerns at the same time, you could be mixing some ingredients that donât go together. For example, if you are dealing with fine lines and acne, you probably have a retinol serum and an AHA/BHA treatment in your arsenal. On their own they can work wonders but combined? These ingredients do not mix together as they both exfoliate the skin. Using them in tandem can cause irritation and dry out the skin. Instead, try using them interchangeably. One night you could use the retinol and then the next night, your AHA/BHA.
A good rule of thumb is to use an active ingredient with a calming one; like using a retinol and then a hyaluronic acid serum afterwards. It's really important that the products in your routine compliment one another so you can actually see results and prevent irritation.
If your skincare routine is an extensive one, filled with multiple steps and products that you apply every night, you may be overwhelming your skin. This could potentially lead to irritation and could damage your skin barrier.
In reality, most of us are better off with a simpler routine. Sometimes it IS nice to pamper ourselves with a spa night that includes a 10-step routine but itâs best to do this once in a while. For everyday, a short and simple routine is better.Â
So check in with your skin and look through the products youâve been using. Go back to the basics that only include a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Donât forget the sunscreen in the morning though!
Weâve seen those ads and videos that show a skincare product promising to change your skin overnight, am I right? As much as we want this to be a reality, sadly it just isnât true. Skincare can take a minimum of 3 weeks to show results as it takes around that long for your skin cells to go through its life cycle.
If youâre worried your serum didnât do anything the next day after using it for the first time, just be patient and be consistent with it and give it at least 3 weeks before deciding whether itâs worth keeping in your routine or not.
We hope this helped clear some misunderstandings with your skincare routine! As always, skincare takes a lot of adjusting and patience. Our skin is dynamic so it's best to be aware of its needs.

Donât Do These Skincare Mistakes
]]>One of the most well known ingredients to use when it comes to acne, salicylic acid is a type of BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) that helps reduce acne by exfoliating the pores and keeping them clear.
This ingredient can be found in many skincare productsâfrom cleansers to moisturizers! Even makeup products can have this ingredient to prevent acne-prone skin from getting clogged while wearing foundation.
Since potential side effects include dryness and irritation, donât forget to patch test first and add it slowly into your routine.
These are acids that are derived from plants and they help exfoliate dead skin cells and reduce inflammation. Hello clear pores! â¨
The most common AHAs recommended for acne-prone skin are Glycolic, Lactic, and Mandelic Acids. These can be found in the form of toners, essences, and serums to easily add to your routine.
You can also use AHA products on other acne-prone areas, like your back and chest. Make sure to patch test first and stay consistent!
A plant native to Southeast Asia, Heartleaf was initially eaten for itâs antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Now itâs extracted and included in skincare products to help reduce acne and calm the skin.Â
As a humectant, this is great for dry or sensitive skin people to also help restore hydration and rebalance the moisture levels of the skin.
We love this ingredient so much that weâve created a sheet mask that is infused with it to help you fight your acne! Check out our Oh My Heart sheet mask here:
Hemp seed oil is made by cold pressing hemp seeds to produce a clear, green oil. Itâs known to reduce inflammation and balance the skinâs oil production which makes it perfect for acne prone, combo, and oily skin types.Â
This ingredient is also great at locking in moisture so your skin stays nourished and moisturized. Weâve created a serum that incorporates Hemp Seed Oil perfectly with our Leaf Drops serum! Itâs a hybrid oil-serum product that moisturizes the skin while also treating your pimples. Check it out over here:
Thatâs it for our acne fighting ingredients! Remember that acne can take months to heal but with patience and consistency, you are sure to get results to maintain an acne-free complexion.Â

]]>The answer to that question is, well it differs from person to person. Factors like genetics, stress, and lifestyle affect each personâs skin. If you struggle with acne that just keeps coming back, read on to learn more!
Depending on your age, you can either have teenage hormonal acne or adult hormonal acne.
Hormonal acne usually occurs when thereâs a change in our hormones and this happens during our teenage yearsâhello puberty; and/or well into our adulthoodâstress and aging and other changes going with our body, oh my!
As growing teens, our bodies are going through a lot of changes: growth spurts, menstruation, you name it, and this triggers the cycle of breakouts.Â
In adulthood, hormonal acne usually occurs from 20s-40s and itâs most common in women. Womenâs bodies develop during their 20s to prepare for pregnancy and with this new flux in hormones, breakouts will start to happen.
Other factors that affect hormonal acne are genetics and stress! If acne runs in the family, itâs likely youâll get them too. Stress hormones, like cortisol, can also result in breakouts.
Teen hormonal acne shows itself mostly on the nose and forehead area. Thereâs an overproduction of oil, and pimples are mostly the red, under-the-skin type of cysts that are quite tender to the touch.Â
For adults, hormonal acne is frequently found on the chin, jawline, and neck area.
Depending on the severity of your hormonal acne, you can choose to either look for over the counter (OTC) skin care products or get professional advice from your dermatologist.
If you have severe hormonal acne, itâs best to schedule an appointment with your dermatologist so they can provide you with prescription strength products like Retinoids.
If your hormonal acne is more mild, here are some tips we recommend:
Be consistent with your skincare routine by making sure you wash your face twice a day for at least 60 seconds, never skip moisturizer, and apply sunscreen every morning.Â
Centella Asiatica is a great example of an anti-inflammatory ingredient, which can be found in our Leaf Drops Serum!
Tea Tree also reduces inflammation and what better way to incorporate this by applying the AM Spot Fighter patch, which is infused with Tea Tree, to your pimples! This will keep you from touching your face and will let your spots heal.
Itâs best to have a proper, balanced diet so that our skin doesnât get worse! Eating more foods that are high in antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory can help reduce hormonal acne and promote better skin health.
Good foods to include are: strawberries, blueberries, green apples, black beans, salmon, carrots and spinach.
Try to limit your intake of processed food, dairy, and foods high in sugar as they can increase inflammation.
Hormonal Acne is not fun at all but we hope we were able to shed some light on how to manage it! Know that this is pretty common and you are not alone. As long as you stick to your routine, check in with your dermatologist, and stay patient, youâll definitely get results. You got this!
