What's the Difference Between Essence, Toner and Serum?
Back at it again with more skincare 101s!
Alright, so obviously you want to know the difference between these seemingly similar products, correct? Yay! we're super excited because these are great additions to a routine. In fact, we dare to say some are actually quite essential. 😌
Still, it can be hard to keep track of all the skincare options out there, especially when it comes to these 3 products. Is it a toner, is it an essence, what the heck is a serum?!?! Don't worry, we'll get into it! First, it's safe to say that they all serve a different purpose within your routine. 😌 Here's why:
Toner:
Toner should be part of your everyday routine, morning and night. After cleansing, your skin’s hydration and pH levels may be a bit off. This step fixes that! It preps your skin and re-nourishes your barrier before it gets even more damaged. Without toner, your skin barrier may become dry and vulnerable, which eventually leads to skin sensitivity, breakouts, and all that stuff you don’t want! We would 10/10 recommend including this step in your routine and the FaceTory Artemisia Toner/Mist is a great option!
Essence:
Essence has been known in Asian skincare to be the ultimate product for plump, healthy, and bright skin! It’s more concentrated than a toner yet more lightweight than a serum. Think of it as the perfect balance between toner and serum! This product adds a lot of great nutrients and benefits to your skin.
Serum:
Serums are amazing products! They tend to contain active ingredients that help you address specific skin concerns (i.e dark spots, aging, dullness), making them much more powerful than essences and toners! You might even find products that are a 2-in-1 (i.e toner serum). In these cases, it's safe to say that they are a mix of hydrating benefits plus all the goodness of a serum's effective ingredients!
PSSSST! We here at FaceTory have two facial serums just waiting for you to try!
Try our Sky Drop serum and say hello to hydrated plump skin ;D!
Bid hello to our Leaf Drops serum and bid farewell to redness ;)!
At this point, you might be wondering if you need all 3 products in your routine. Well, it depends on you and your skin! Most people would use a toner every day, as it's seen as more of a necessity compared to the other 2. Still, it doesn't hurt to incorporate essences and serums to help boost your skin and minimize redness, darkness, fine lines, and all that jazz.
My 2 cents:
- To those who are interested in all 3: Use toner and switch between essence and serum throughout the week.
- To those who are skeptical: Use toner every day and try out a serum or essence when you feel ready. There is no shame in taking your time with skincare!
- To those who hate creams/ thick moisturizers: Use all 3 to layer watery products for needed hydration. This will help make sure your skin stays hydrated without using a super thick cream.
- To those with sensitive skin: Use a toner and try out an essence with hydrating and/or soothing ingredients (i.e. Oats, Artemisia, Aloe Vera, Centella Asiatica )
