Ingredient 101: AHA

Ingredient 101: AHA

What is an AHA?

AHA is a chemical used to exfoliate the outermost layer of skin to slough off any dead skin cells to reveal new healthy skin cells below.

Your skin already has a renewal process that regenerates new cells every 27 days but as you age, that process also slows down and becomes less effective. Using an AHA will accelerate that shredding process and help your skin shred off the dead cells to reveal smoother and younger looking skin.

What type of skin benefits the most from AHA?
Even though all skin types can benefit from AHA, DRY and aging skin benefits the most because it helps retexture and brighten rough flaky skin while also adding a bit of hydration. It also helps increase collagen production which is needed for aging skin.

What masks contain AHA?

PACKage Korea I Love Myself Make up Boosting Mask

This mask contains various types of AHA including lactic and glycolic acid that help resurface skin cells for a brighter and smoother complexion - perfect for applying makeup.

This two step mask contains an AHA peeling swab and a soothing jelly mask. The AHA part of this mask is contained in the cotton swab that is soaked in 9% of lactic acid to exfoliate away dry rough patches or acne scars. There is also salicylic acid in the swab which is a BHA (We'll get more into that later) that goes deep beneath the surface of skin to deep clean the gunk and oil from the pores. This cocktail of AHA and BHA exfoliants is great for combination and oily skin types.

NOTE: Always apply sunscreen after using AHA because your skin is more sensitive to the sun's UV rays.
